First of all, I take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the true Catholic believers I know, despite my concept of spirituality being substantially different. Anyway, keep your spirits up!
We left off with the promise that I would tell you about the origins of the song ‘Apocalypse Now,’ and I will.
Originally, I composed the instrumental base and called it ‘Onslaught’ because in its raw state it made me think of something ignorant, strong, brutal but more sophisticated than Juggernaut (they are two Marvel characters). Well, ‘Onslaught’ came to mind because my brother, when we had the PlayStation, had filled me with Marvel vs. something, and I often played Marvel vs. Capcom, if I’m not mistaken, and I always picked the Marvel characters because I was bad at fighting games and thought I could compensate by using characters where you just had to press buttons randomly to do effective moves… I was wrong! I was bad then, and I’m still bad now!
Returning to the song, I developed it after a trip to Amsterdam. It was the last of a series of songs in which I used a new approach never tried before, although perhaps ‘Onslaught’ was the most classic and normal.
I remember that trip for an introspective journey I took in my hotel room. I asked myself how I should proceed in the musical field, and the answer was to continue alone because I would have within me all the means to compose and record what I wanted. As fate would have it, on the very evening of my return from Amsterdam, a friend of mine invited me to try ‘amnesia’… from then on, I have never tried drugs again. It was a pleasant experience at the moment but devastating on a psychological level, a mix of pleasure, disorientation, and nullification of cognitive abilities… never again!
The title ‘Apocalypse Now’ came about around 2021. I didn’t know what to be inspired by, but the instrumental base led me towards the world of video games, so I started looking at the most recent ones, but I couldn’t find anything until I read the plot of Darksiders. Then I watched a trailer, and I was convinced since I’ve also been fascinated by the theme of the apocalypse!
Initially, I had two other singers record the track, but with the first singer, the lyrics were poorly written (analyzed and corrected by teachers from Berlitz… go figure!), while the second singer didn’t convince me. With Kylee, from the first listen, I understood that apart from a few tweaks here and there, she had grasped the right approach!
In May, I will introduce you to another singer with whom I have collaborated a lot and am still doing so, his name is Craig.
Next week, I will talk about my first CD purchased around the age of 13, perhaps one of the darkest periods of my life, excluding 2024.
